Working with rural communities means that many schools are difficult to reach, with 3 of the 8 schools we currently work at not on a bus route. Problems with accessing these communities created many of the issues which the Arajuno Road Project is trying to overcome, and having a safe, roadworthy vehicle is essential.
Our current vehicle is over 30 years old, and has served us well over the last few years, but its life is coming to an end. We urgently need a new vehicle to help us get to the schools and function properly as a project. Problems with the current vehicle have led to us missing classes and spending large amounts on repairs which would otherwise have gone to the schools.
We hope to buy a 2nd hand 10 seater mini-van/bus. This will be small enough for to make it manageable on the jungle roads, and allow us to expand to maximum volunteer capacity from 6 to 10. The 2nd hand car market in Ecuador is overinflated due to an import ban on used cards into the country, and a small number of people able to purchase new vehicles. We calculate that we need around $10,000 to buy a car that will withstand jungle life, of which $6000 is needed in donations. We have started asking for donations and have had an encouraging response, but still need lots of help and quickly.
School talks have proved successful in the past, and can result in a charity day to help raise money for the project. Yard sales are a simply way to raise some money and get rid of some old junk as are ebay events. Ebay events are when a group of friends all donate an item they no longer need or use and it is sold on ebay, with all the proceeds going to the appeal.
You can donate online at our donations page, or by cheque or bank transfer by contacting us.
