Top 10...Flying Tips
info hub
- 1. Bring the right hand-luggage
- Your hand-luggage will be your travel companion for the whole flight, and if the airline lose your baggage then it may be your only belongings for a few. Pack a change of clothes, your wash kit and essentials in case the worst happens.
- 2. Local Cash
Something to plan ahead for, but having the local currency can save time, effort and money (through exchange rates). The first thing you are going to need when you arrive at your destination is some small notes for a bus or taxi, and maybe a meal.- 3. Comfy Clothes
- You will want to be as comfortable as possible when on a long haul flight, and although smart clothes may get you than first-class upgrade, not wearing a belt and slip off shoes will be helpful at customs, as well as staying relaxed during the flight.
- 4. Bring Entertainment
- Don't forget the two hours that you will be in the airport before the flight and bring some entertainment. You're not going to want to strain your eyes all the time so something along with a book is advisable.
- 5. Exercise
Going for a long walk or a run before your fly can help tire your body before a long flight. Not only will this help you sleep, but it will also stop you getting restless. Go for a walk on the plane to stretch your legs and help stop DVT.- 6. Drinks and Snacks.
- There may be free drinks on the plane but not in the departure lounge. Security restrictions mean that you can't bring liquids into the airport but you can fill up an empty bottle at a drinking fountain Having some food can save you some money and help the cravings of all that duty free chocolate.
- 7. Plan Ahead
- The last thing that you will want to do after a long haul flight is look for somewhere to stay, especially if you are being hassled by people at the airport. Book your first night so you know where you are going and you won't find your hostel fully booked.
- 8. Choosing the right seat
Personal preference is key here but here are some tips. The front seats in a row have the most leg room. Weak bladder, sit in the aisle. The back rows may have more space, and are statistically safer than the front of the plane but are noisier.- 9. Keep Hydrated
- Alcohol is 2 to 3 times more potent whilst flying due to the altitude. Drink plenty of water to combat the air-conditioning and being seated for a long time, and to help stop jetlag. The consequences of this may effect your choice in tip 8!.
- 10. Stop the leaks
- Not related to the last tip, this is for your luggage. Anything with liquid in it may leak, either due to the pressure at altitude, or because of rough handling by an airport baggage handler. To stop the rest of your belongings getting spoilt, wrap you containers in plastic bags.
