October Newsletter 2009: Amazon Teaching Project

There is a lot to talk about what happened at the project side in October: New schools, new records, adult classes and Halloween! Let´s start from the beginning…

Due to the schools strikes in September we had the time to experience the rainforest in many new ways. Still, we were very excited to hear that schools went back to normal and we were able to start with English classes: Pupils at km 22 and km 35, who have known us for a long time, were happy to see us again. Children at the new schools at km 17 and km 40 got used to us very quickly and soon started to welcome us with a big smile on their faces everytime we arrived. A big challange was the school in El Triunfo: While assisting the English teacher the last school year, this time we got the opportunity to give and plan classes at our own. A lot of work considering it is the biggest school in this region. But definitely worth the impact we are making!

Back at the house it was very exciting to see the arrivals of many new people. In fact, we had nine volunteers at one time in the house and it was nice to have the house full again! They all brought many new and fresh ideas to the lesson plannings and advanced the project in so many ways. Reading about the number of volunteers, you can also imagine what a great Halloween party we´ve had. The theme was “Jungle Outfits“ and everybody was pretty creative.

While going to all of those schools, many parents came up to us to ask if we could teach them English as they have seen what an impact we have on their children. Everybody was eager to give it a try. And so we spread the word and started giving adult classes in El Triunfo and at km 35! The adult seem to like it a lot and the volunteers enjoy this change of teaching.

What is left to say is that October was a dynamic month with many improvements to the project, which wouldn´t have been possible without all the volunteers! Let´s see what November has to offer…
