May Newsletter 2010: Amazon Teaching Project

The football competition finished with a trophy for San Ramon and top goal scorer award going to Eloy at km 35. It gave us some ideas for the vacations!

May was a month of changes with Vinnie leaving after two extremely productive months where she has been invaluable in helping out the project, and Simon on holiday. We finally started teaching at San Ramon – the largest school we work in that needs two teachers to cover 6 classes including for the first time 8th, 9th and 10th graders.

All the other schools continue with extra classes for 7th graders in km 10 and km 17 to help prepare them for life at college in September.
We continued our work at km 40 where Natalie was helping the one local teacher with classes three days a week in mathematics, social sciences and all the other normal classes. Natalie also helped out by starting computer classes at km6 because as they are outside of the El Triunfo network they don´t receive a visit from the computer sciences teacher and therefore don´t have any computer teaching. Natalie reluctantly left after two great months and with a lot of thanks from our side as her help was invaluable in making a real difference in two schools over and above our normal commitments.

Also, Fiona and Camilla left after 8 weeks in the house and left a big hole in both the teaching and social side of things. Finally, both Bronwyn and Orlando – two other medium term stayers – left and we will sorely miss Bronwyn´s organisational skills and Orlando´s music. We wish them all the very best in their next adventures.

We had to say goodbye to Cookie who we have found out has cancer and is being looked after by Nick until the fateful day.
Plans are coming along for the house extension and the return of Jeremy who will coordinate the community development project.
We have reorganized the adult classes so that they are now in two locations on a Wednesday afternoon and include a total of five groups.

Km 22 had a lick of paint which we continue to work on and hopefully we can turn the English class room into a fun and nice place to learn English, with some hand painted pictures and words in English.

Alex the new assistant coordinator starts at the beginning of June and will be a great help as we finish the school year, organize the summer activities and plan the start of the new school year – a year which will be critical for the organisation as we have the opportunity to start in all schools, at the beginning of the year, with new books , new procedures and with a fixed timetable. This means that all the hard work done this year will stand us in good stead for the 2010/2011 academic year and we can cement our position in the schools and add real value and make a real difference to the English teaching in the rural schools where we work – the reason why we are here.
